LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: ASU & THUNDERBIRD

What does an asteroid named Psyche 10 floating 270 million miles away from Earth have in common with the world’s fastest and most accurate test for Tuberculosis, really good restaurants, Arabic STEM students, and rumors of “green swill”? ASU President Dr. Michael Crow explained the connections to an eager audience at the International Spy Museum on June 9.  For Tbirds who couldn't join us in D.C., the TIAA video is available now.

The connection is how Arizona State University (ASU) thinks and plans for the future. And ASU's approach to each one indicates how Thunderbird will be brought into the ASU family. As Dr. Crow reminded guests, “ASU is more than palm trees,” shorts, and warm weather. It’s a $3.2 billion public enterprise that educated more than 75,000 students from 170 countries in 2017 alone. Its reputation as a “high-speed, innovative research institution” makes it a tremendous launchpad for future Tbirds.

Dr. Crow presented the vision for Thunderbird’s next evolution, shared a vision for the future Thunderbird campus, and formally introduced Dr. Sanjeev Khagram as the new Dean and Director-General for the Thunderbird School of Global Management. Dr. Crow also fielded Q&A from attendees. “I have long been a follower of the Thunderbird School of Global Management and the Thunderbird idea,” Dr. Crow said shortly after his own introduction. Recognizing Thunderbird’s unique set of characteristics, he added, “There are many business schools. There is only one Thunderbird.”

Given the connections he drew, Dr. Crow challenged the audience with this question: “Who knows what international and global will ultimately mean to the Thunderbird of the future?”  A future that will be defined within the current vision: “To operate a world-class, elite graduate school of global management operating in new facilities and supported by the resources of a research university.”  However, he emphasized, success will not be achieved apart from Thunderbird alumni engagement. And thus, the next phase of our journey begins.
