Kevin Roos, ’16, is a recent graduate from Thunderbird that is already feeling the incredible impact the school will have on his life. Working in different parts of the world has been a goal of his since he was a teenager, and an expatriate life grows ever closer with his newfound position in the corporate world.
Shortly after graduating from Thunderbird in December, Kevin became a management consultant at Point B, a nationwide consulting firm. He currently lives in Phoenix, and is working on a large-scale IT transformation for Arizona’s largest electric utility company. His diverse work experience in supply chain management, mergers & acquisitions, and IT consulting will continue to develop the skill sets he needs to eventually help large companies penetrate emerging markets overseas. Suffice to say, with Point B being named a Best Place to Work in the US by Fortune magazine, Kevin loves his new company.
His journey towards international business began in 2011. Upon graduation from Northern Arizona University, where he studied finance, Kevin became a supply chain manager in the corporate relocation industry. He got his first glimpse into the expatriate life by managing domestic logistics for international corporate executives at Fortune 500 companies. He spoke with his clients daily about their assignments in places like Geneva, Singapore, Buenos Aires, and Hong Kong. It inspired him to seek opportunities which would place him in similar positions. The seed for a degree from an international business program was planted, and Thunderbird became his clear choice, due to reputation and broad alumni base.
During his tenure at Thunderbird, Kevin was an Economic Development Consultant in Peru through Thunderbird’s Emerging Markets Laboratory. For three months, Kevin lived in Cusco and Piura working with local government officials. Despite numerous challenges and an ambiguous project scope, the team’s deliverable was successful and received praise from their client. Today, their long-term strategic plan is currently being used as a model for 46 municipalities throughout Peru. This experience reaffirmed why Kevin wanted to be an international businessman.
In his free time, Kevin likes to take spontaneous trips throughout the southwest, collect Americana, and spend as much time as possible on the water. His passions include history, economics, learning about different cultures, and restaurant hopping with friends and family.
As one of the first members of TIAA's Scholars Program, Kevin strongly believes the support he received from the independent alumni network was instrumental in his success at Thunderbird. The connections he made through TIAA exposed him to incredible opportunities, cultures, and alumni throughout the world that are as passionate about global trade and diplomacy as he is. He looks forward to achieving his goal of becoming an executive expat, and avows that when he does, he'll be attending TIAA meetings in other parts of the world. Kevin hopes to continue the Thunderbird tradition of supporting new students while contributing to the Thunderbird mystique fostered by TIAA.
